A Bryant University student was killed early Thursday morning in a car crash on the Smithfield campus.
Officials said a car with five freshmen crashed into a tree on Physical Road at about 1 a.m. The road is a dead end that leads to the school's maintenance facility, and it is not well lit.
Christiano Barbosa, of East Providence, who was sitting in the back seat, died at Rhode Island Hospital from his injuries. Four other students were treated for injuries at Rhode Island Hospital and released.
"Our hearts go out to Christiano's family and friends, and to the other students involved in the accident," the university said in a statement.
Smithfield police said they do not expect foul play in the crash. The driver of the car passed a field sobriety test.
Bryant University did not respond to numerous requests for information from NBC 10 News.
Students said they've been hearing about the crash from each other.
"So far, it's been pretty hush-hush other than an email from the headmaster explaining what's happening," freshman Nick Morrissette said. "Kids are talking about it, but there's been no response from the school yet, other than that."
The names of the surviving students were not immediately released.
A vigil will be held for Barbosa on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Faith Christian Center in Seekonk.
