PROVIDENCE -

Fourteen organizations in Rhode Island have received $2.1 million in federal funding to support AmeriCorps volunteer efforts.

The funding, announced Monday by Gov. Lincoln Chafee, will pay for 333 AmeriCorps positions around the state.

The organizations receiving the money include the Ocean State Environmental Education Collaborative, Teach for America, the Providence Children's Museum and the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence, a Central Falls charter school.

Many of the groups are involved in efforts to mentor, tutor and engage students from low-income homes.

Other programs receiving funds aim to help veterans or provide health care to low-income families.
