A Providence woman was found guilty Monday of child neglect in the death of her 5-week-old baby daughter.
Rhode Island Family Court Associate Justice Michael B. Forte found 24-year-old Mayra Gonzalez guilty after a four day, jury waived trial. She was sentenced to three years with 15 months to serve in prison and the remainder of the sentence suspended with probation.
According the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office, Gonzalez knowing allowed her baby, Kristina, to suffer more than 50 injuries.
The baby was rushed to the hospital on June 20, 2012 after suffering broken ribs, a broken skull and brain swelling. She died on July 7, 2012.
The baby's father, Christopher Jimenez, has also been charged with the murder of the girl and is pending trial.
Attorney General Peter Kilmartin said in a statement that Gonzalez was "too blinded by her love for Christopher Jimenez to recognize the abuse of her baby daughter until it was too late."
