Fire damages multi-family home in Cranston

CRANSTON, R.I. -

There were tense moments on Sunday afternoon when a fire broke out inside a Cranston home.

According to the Cranston Fire Department the alarm first sounded shortly after noon and crews quickly responded to the multi-family home on Greenwood Street.

NBC 10 spoke to Cranston Fire Chief William McKenna who said that about a dozen people were at home at the time of the fire, but that thankfully none of them got hurt.

According to Chief McKenna "it appears the fire started in the kitchen. The kitchen was fully engulfed when we got on the first floor. It extended up the walls. We got onto the 2nd floor. We were able to stop it from going up into the addict. Most of the damage was to the first floor kitchen, bedroom and a second floor room."

The Red Cross did not have to provide the family with food or shelter because according to the chief they found a place to stay for the night on their own.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but the Cranston Fire Marshall is investing.
