Pacheco drops out of RI secretary of state race

Posted: Updated:

Former state Democratic Party Chairman Edwin Pacheco said Friday he's dropping out of the race for secretary of state in Rhode Island.

Pacheco confirmed the move to NBC 10's Bill Rappleye.

According to the Associated Press, Pacheco said he wants to focus on his family and his work as executive director of Education in Action, a nonprofit that provides civics and financial literacy programs for children.

Pacheco's departure leaves two other Democrats vying for the seat -- Newport businessman Guillame de Ramel and Nellie Gorbea, the former executive director of HousingWorks RI.

Pacheco served as chairman of the Democratic Party from 2010 until he resigned in April to focus on his campaign. He is a former state representative from Burrillville.

Incumbent Secretary of State Ralph Mollis is term-limited and has said he may run for lieutenant governor.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
