Woonsocket voters trim field of mayoral candidates

Posted: Updated:

Woonsocket voters went to the polls Tuesday to choose two mayoral candidates to face each other in next month's general election.

Four candidates were on the ballot: incumbent Mayor Leo Fontaine, state Rep. Lisa Baldelli-Hunt, Dave Fisher and Michael Moniz.

The race is non-partisan, and the top two vote-getters will appear on the ballot Nov. 5.  The winner will serve an unusual three-year term as Woonsocket transitions to holding municipal elections in even years starting in 2016.

Woonsocket has been placed under the oversight of a state-appointed budget commission because of its troubled finances. The commission has sharply raised property taxes.

The Woonsocket Call reported that voters are also choosing seven candidates for City Council  from a field of 15.
