A Whitinsville, Mass., man was arraigned on charges that he assaulted his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter.
Prosecutors said Rowan Cook, 29, fractured the girl's skull.
The Worcester Telegram quotes Cook as telling authorities he was taking care of the child at her home in Shrewsbury on Sept. 9. When the toddler allegedly starting throwing food, he changed her and put her to bed.
The newspaper reported that when Cook when to check on the child a few minutes later, the girl was unresponsive and that he was unable to revive her.
Cook allegedly went next door and asked neighbors to call 911.
At his arraignment in Westborough District Court, prosecutors said the injuries were so severe that the girl's brain bled. She was also on a ventilator for an unspecified time.
Cook pleaded not guilty to assault and battery to a child, resulting in substantial injury.
The newspaper reported that Cook was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail and ordered to stay away from the alleged victim.
