Jury selection is expected to begin Tuesday in the murder trial of Thomas Gardner, 36. He was charged with beating a New Bedford man to death in 2011.
The victim, Michael Duarte, met Gardner in New Bedford to look at a house for sale, according to court documents. Gardner then beat and killed Duarte with a hammer and hid his body in the basement, according to police reports.
Gardner stole Duarte's money and car and fled to Connecticut. Police found Gardner by the car's lo-jack system and he was eventually captured after a police pursuit.
Gardner was convicted and sentenced to a year in a Connecticut prison.
He returned to Massachusetts in 2012 to face charges in connection with Duarte's murder.
