PROVIDENCE -

An estimated 15,000 people are walking the streets of Providence to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.

The 18th annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Providence kicked off Sunday morning at Exchange Terrace, where participants began a non-competitive, three-mile walk.

Organizers are hoping to raise $1 million for the Cancer Society's efforts against breast cancer.

Making Strides events are held across the country and raise about $60 million each year for the Cancer Society. The walks aim to honor breast cancer survivors, educate people about the importance of prevention and early detection and raise money for research.
