Health Check: Women and Infants to host women's cancer conference

Posted: Updated:

Women and Infants Hospital is scheduled to host a conference called, "What's Up Doc? What's New and Best in Women's Cancer Treatment and Survivorship."

The conference is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 11, and part of a national series of events through the Society of Gynecologic Oncology.

"We're collaborating with them to put on a series of about 15 half-hour lectures that will look at the range of cancers that affect women particularly but also provide some background about cancer in general," said Dr. Skip Granai of Women and Infants Hospital.

The lectures will focus on the latest in treatments, and the groundbreaking ovarian cancer research being performed at the hospital.

"Ovarian cancer for example is often thought of as a disease where the treatment isn't as effective as we would like but it's certainly getting better and better," Granai said.

"Women are living much, much longer with ovarian cancer. Our current concept of ovarian cancer has become a chronic disease. While we may not literally be able to cure it in many instances, by treating it periodically with more and more specific treatments that focus on the causes of it or the genetics of it, women can live longer today with ovarian cancer than they used to in the recent past."

Beyond medicine, the conference will also tackle survivorship, quality of life, and art, massage and pet therapies.

"We're not certain that, of course, that ultimately changes the outcome but if you can make the moment relatively better, whatever moment it is, what would be wrong with that?" Granai said.

The conference is free, includes lunch and is open to the public.

Participants are encouraged to register to ensure a seat.
