Only on 10: Snakes, alligator found inside Warwick apartment

WARWICK, R.I. -

More than a dozen animals, including 13 snakes and an alligator, were found crammed into a Warwick apartment after police were called to investigate a domestic assault.

"Exotic reptiles that you don't see every day," said Joe Warzycha of the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Police said they found snakes from 6 inches to 12 feet long, geckos, other reptiles and a 3-foot alligator in the bathtub.

"The alligator, you're required to have a permit. They did not. They had one red-eared slider, which is a turtle which are illegal in Rhode Island and they're not allowed to have. So I seized that and brought it to the vet to be examined," Warzycha said.

Neighbors said they had no idea. They knew that there had been domestic issues, but a living reptile collection?

"I don't know how many snakes they may have. Some people are deathly afraid of snakes. That isn't right. It shouldn't be not in a place like this. This is a clustered affair over here," one neighbor said.

Warzycha said the SPCA is scrambling to place all of the animals somewhere else.

"It poses logistical issues. We can't house these animals in this number and we'll have to reach out to other facilities, pet stores, possibly the zoo," he said.
