Neighborhood straddles boil order boundary

WEST WARWICK, R.I. -

It's a fine line in some spots between the haves and the have-nots.

Kent County Water Authority customers will have to do without clean water for a few days or at least boil it first.

"We just go out and get the bottled water and life goes on," said Greg Petrarca, who lives off Burlingame Road in West Warwick.

He's taking the boil water advisory in stride, despite getting a heavy dose of water after it tested positive for E. coli over the weekend.

"I spent the whole weekend, yesterday, working out in the yard and watching football and drinking ice water all afternoon. Then I saw the report on Channel 10 on the boil water issue and I said, 'Oh, that's good.' I spent the whole afternoon drinking tainted water, apparently," Petrarca said.

But if he lived just up the road, he wouldn't have this problem.

"Just right over the line, they're on a different system," Petrarca said.

Across Burlingame Road, Cindy Wahl's neighborhood gets its water from private wells.

"I was actually glad, the one time, that I'm not on city water," Wahl said. "You know, we used bottled water a lot ourselves. But I feel bad because I would forget to get up and brush my teeth with bottled water."

But Petrarca isn't feeling bad for himself, even if he has to brush with the bottled stuff.

"I've always been impressed with the water quality. I've never had a problem drinking out of the tap. So, this is just a little bump in the road. It's not a big issue for me," Petrarca said.

He said he feels fine.

There are no official reports of anyone getting sick from drinking the water.
