Johnston fire captain arrested on drug charge

Posted: Updated:

North Providence police have charged a Johnston fire captain with a felony drug offense, saying he carried contraband in his personal vehicle.

Col. Paul Martellini says police found five pills of Suboxone in the vehicle and suspected drug paraphernalia in a firefighter's duty bag after they stopped Fire Capt. Richard A. Turchetti for driving an unregistered Jeep on Sept. 11.

Police say Turchetti was unlawfully carrying the Suboxone pills.

"People do utilize these tablets when they are recovering from a heroin addiction or when they are currently using the drug heroin," Martellini told NBC 10.

Martellini said the police noticed Turchetti's unoccupied vehicle in a neighborhood under surveillance on reports of illegal narcotics.

"It was very much unsettling," Martellini said.

Turchetti was arraigned and released on $1,000 personal recognizance.

Johnston's fire chief says Turchetti has not been suspended and is on sick leave.

Attempts to contact Turchetti on the charges on Friday were unsuccessful.
