RI lawmaker seeks audit of DMV computer system

Posted: Updated:

A Rhode Island state senator is calling for an audit of the state's overdue and over-budget effort to buy a computer system for the Division of Motor Vehicles.

The Providence Journal reported that Democratic Sen. Frank S. Lombardi of Cranston said the project's difficulties show mismanagement or lack of management.

The estimated cost has risen from $8.8 million to $15.5 million.

The project began with the awarding of a contract in January 2008. The project stalled in 2010 when the state tried to implement the new computer system and it wouldn't work.

Chafee administration officials have since been working to get the project back on track and expect it to "go live" next May.

Lombardi credits the administration with getting things moving but says the project was poorly overseen.
