PROVIDENCE -

A suspected gang member was charged Thursday for his alleged involvement in an overnight shooting in South Providence.

Vicente Rodriguez, 23, was arraigned in Providence District Court. He's facing several felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon. He was ordered held on $75,000 surety bail.

Police said they were talking with 18-year-old Anthony Marshall of Sackett Street and some other neighbors at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when two men in hoodies came around the corner and started shooting at them.

"(Wednesday) night was a truly dangerous situation for the police. They were out with a gang, a known king in the city, interviewing some members. At that time, a rival gang came upon the police and their enemy gang opened fire," said Chief Hugh Clements of the Providence Police Department.

Marshall was taken to a hospital after suffering gunshot wounds to his legs. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Police pursued the two shooters. One jumped into a car on a side street and took off, leading police on a high-speed chase down Elmwood Avenue, eventually ending on Depew Street.

Police said a .38-caliber Colt revolver with six bent casings inside was thrown from the car. That vehicle intentionally struck two police cars, causing significant damage during the pursuit.

"A very dangerous car chase. We made an apprehension of two individuals with a firearm seized. The individuals are known to us in a gang across the city," Clements said.

Rodriguez and 20-year-old James Lawrence were arrested.

Lawrence is accused of being a shooter in the crime, but didn't appear in court Thursday.

However, Lawrence's mother admonished police and defended her son.

"They're dirty. The system is wrong and they're dirty," she told NBC 10.

She said she didn't know if her son fired any shots because she wasn't there.

Police said they are still searching for two more people related to the shooting: one who took off on Sackett Street and another who fled from Depew Street.
