RI Blood Center opens new lab

Posted: Updated:
PROVIDENCE -

The Rhode Island Blood Center is opening a new 20,000-square-foot laboratory for the testing of donated blood from Rhode Island and many hospitals in Massachusetts.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee helped give the new laboratory a ceremonial opening Thursday morning at the Blood Center's office in Providence.

The $8 million lab will allow the lab to test more blood for infectious disease. The center also matches blood and blood products for use in hospitals.

The center serves all of Rhode Island as well as some hospitals in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Founded in 1979, the center collects about 280 units of blood every day.
