PROVIDENCE -

A Rhode Island task force charged with looking at ways to keep firearms out of the hands of those with severe mental illness is getting to work.

Leaders of the state's General Assembly announced their appointees to the Gun Safety Task Force on Wednesday.

Lawmakers created the panel shortly before they adjourned for the year in July. The task force is expected to review laws and regulations on access to fire arms by those with significant mental illnesses.

The task force includes lawmakers, mental health professionals, law enforcement officers and gun rights advocates.

The task force was supposed to report its conclusions by Jan. 1, but it is expected it will be given an extension.
