DEM warns of possible rabid cat from Mass. in RI

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. -

Environmental officials in Rhode Island are warning there may be a rabid cat roaming around North Smithfield after its owner brought the animal from Massachusetts while it was under quarantine and it escaped.

The Department of Environmental Management says on Wednesday that the cat is a 12.5-pound orange tabby.

They say the cat had not been vaccinated for rabies and sustained a wound from an unknown cause. It bit someone in Massachusetts and was put into quarantine.

The cat's owner then brought it to Rhode Island, even though that is not allowed for an animal under quarantine, and the cat escaped.

The DEM says anyone who sees a cat fitting that description in the area should avoid it and call animal control or police.
