State police said a man was killed before dawn Tuesday as he tried to walk across the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Providence.
The victim's name was not immediately released.
Police said the man was struck at about 5 a.m. in the right lane near exit 25 by a woman in a minivan. Investigators said they were talking to the driver and that no charges had been filed.
Traffic was tied up for more than an hour while the scene was cleared.
It's the third time in less than a week that a pedestrian has been struck and killed while walking on a Providence-area highway.
Police said not only is stepping foot on a highway discouraged, it's illegal.
"It's strictly prohibited for pedestrians to walk on the highway just for these reasons. You can see the horrific results that occur when it happens," Rhode Island State Police Capt. James Manni said.
A 22-year-old man was struck and killed Sunday while walking on the Interstate 195 bridge between Providence and East Providence, and a man was struck and killed Thursday on I-95 near Route 146.
