With a couple of key strokes and a click of the mouse, you can find "your dirty little secret", a "complete knockout", and "the girl next door".
An advertisement for a 19-year-old girl on backpage.com in Providence offered just that. Backpage.com is the nation's leader in prostitution advertising. The ad was posted September 10th, the day after a 17-year-old Massachusetts girl went missing.
Thursday, Police found the teen at the Super 8 in West Greenwich with 30-year-old Stephen Ardrey. Friday, Ardrey was arrested and arraigned in federal court for sex trafficking and intent to engage in illegal sexual activity with a minor.
He's no stranger to the legal system, he was arrested in 2007 for pimping and prostitution in Georgia. That incident occurred at the Drury Inn.
In Rhode Island it was the Super 8, the advertisement requests the company of older gentlemen, aged 45 and up. The picture shows a young woman standing in her underwear in a hotel room. The comforter in the picture is the same as those seen on booking.com for pictures of the Super 8 in West Greenwich.
The ad also lists Stephen Ardrey's cell phone number, the one he has listed on his blog and other social media sites.
Back in 2010, CNN launched a series of stories targeting Craiglist for sex trafficking of minors. This led Craiglist to close down the 'adult section' of its site.
According to AIM consulting group, the adult section of backpage.com is growing, by February of this year it garnered 4.2 million dollars in advertising up from 2.5 million just the year before.
Every day in Rhode Island more than 100 advertisements are posted selling women for sex who live here. All offering a different version of the fantasy that allegedly landed Ardrey in court, trying to sell the girl next door.
