Police: Man charged with molesting relative

Posted: Updated:

Providence police have arrested and charged a man they said had been inappropriately touching a 9-year-old relative for more than a year.

Charles Pona, 55, of Providence, was arraigned in District Court on Wednesday and charged with three counts of child molestation. He was ordered held without bail.

According to a police report, the relative told authorities that Pona, "covered her mouth with his hands and hold her down while touching her."

Pona's cousin told NBC 10 that he's surprised at the charges and that Pona wouldn't do something like that.

According to the police report, Pona was left alone with the relative by his sister, the girl's mother, and the two would play cards.

Pona's sister told authorities she did not suspect her child was in any danger.
