Providence teacher on leave for allegedly hitting student

Posted: Updated:

NBC 10 News has learned a Providence kindergarten teacher has been put on administrative leave after allegedly hitting a student.

School officials say it happened at the Mary E. Fogarty School on Thursday.

On Friday the School Department released the following statement:

"On Thursday, August 29, a teacher allegedly struck a kindergarten student in one of our classrooms. Upon learning of the incident, at the close of the school day, administrators acted immediately to remove the teacher from the classroom. The individual has been placed on administrative leave pending a full investigation. Our educators are to be held to the highest standards as role models in their students' lives, and the alleged behavior is absolutely intolerable."

The teacher's name has not being released.
