For patrons hoping to grab breakfast at J&D Family Restaurant in Johnston on Thursday morning, they were surprised at what they saw.
A sign saying the restaurant had closed.
On the restaurant's Facebook page, the owners posted a statement which read in part, "We wish to thank all of our customers who have become a part of our family over the years … We want to acknowledge and thank our entire staff. They have all been dedicated and loyal to our family over the years."
Nicole Delos owned the restaurant with her sister. It had been open for 45 years.
She told NBC 10 that business had declined since the death of her father last year. She said the struggling economy is to blame long with the installation of table games at Twin River. She said people are going there to spend their disposal income rather than the restaurant.
"We always enjoyed the food. It was reasonable. You can't go wrong with that," said frequent customer George San Antonio.
Another local eatery, Eddie and Son Diner on Dorrance Street in Providence, closed last week. The diner had been in business for almost 70 years.
Owner Connie Caputo told NBC 10 that it was time for her and her 80-year-old husband Tom Caputo to retire. She said the hours were long and her husband's health had been declining.
"I've been eating here for 25 or 30 years. I'm going to miss them," said Steve Cormier, who ate at the diner.
Locals will also be sure to miss the Friendly's location on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston. The restaurant closed on Sunday, citing the end of its lease on the building.
