The Rhode Island Blood Center said Tuesday it is ending its core blood program on Sept. 15.
The center says new studies encouraging delayed clamping of the umbilical cord makes it hard to collect a usable sample that can be stored, frozen and used for a future transplant. The result will be fewer collections for the program.
The center started the program four years ago.
