Taylor Swift donates guitar to town's silent auction

WEST WARWICK, R.I. -

It's been almost 100 years since West Warwick officially separated from Warwick, and became its own town. That was 1913.

And with the town's big 100 year celebration coming up, it's time to raise money for a celebration party.

"Between the centennial parade, fireworks, ball and concert, there are a ton of expenses to worry about," said Ed Giroux, Councilman and Chair of the West Warwick Centennial Committee.

Recently, the committee received a huge boost from Rhode Island's newest celebrity resident.

"Taylor Swift actually donated a guitar for our silent auction, for our Centennial Ball on Sept. 20," Giroux said.

And it's not just any guitar.

It's an autographed "Baby Taylor" from her own collection, and it's expected to bring in approximately $10,000 for the cause.

"A Baby Taylor guitar is not a Taylor Swift-brand guitar. It's a well-known brand that's been around forever. It's a very high quality acoustic guitar that just happens to be called Baby Taylor, and it's from Taylor Swift's collection, so it's quite a nice double entendre there with the Taylor and the Taylor,'" said musician Dale DeJoy.

"We knew it was ‘in the wind', but it was a secret, and I really have to give full credit at this point to former Mayor Michael Levesque from the town of West Warwick, and he actually was the one that made the contacts that made it happen," Giroux said.

Giroux said it will cost about $50,000 to roll out the celebration, and despite the Taylor Swift guitar donation, the committee is still raising money for the big party.

So far the Rhode Island House and Senate have donated $ 10,000, while Centreville Bank has contributed $10,000. The West Warwick Centennial Committee has also raised close to $10,000 through golf outings and other creative events.

The committee is still seeking donations. For more information visit www.wwturnts100.webs.com.
