Troubled Newport day care linked to summer camp

NEWPORT, R.I. -

The Newport School Superintendent has kicked a summer camp out of school building after realizing it was linked to the Tender Care Learning Center.

"Over the weekend I found out there was enough of a concern to stop the use of the Coggeshall School," said Newport school superintendent John Ambrogi.

Ambrogi had granted free access to the school after the owner of the center told him they were a not-for-profit organization. He says there were no complaints of inappropriate behavior at the camp.

The Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families suspended the center's license following the arrest of a 17-year-old who was charged with sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl at the center.

DCYF investigators found several violations and learned that two employees did not undergo a background check.

Police told NBC 10 the teenager is the son of the center's owner.

"This is just a bad chapter for specifically this young girl and her family," Ambrogi said.

DCYF officials said they can't stop the center's owner from running the summer camp.

However, they can stop the center from trying to run what it called a "fully licensed" kindergarten program. Ambrogi told NBC 10 the center tried to link it to the school district.

"They had come to us before and asked if we wanted to be involved and categorically we said no," Ambrogi said.

City councilman Michael Farley said he wants an investigation into how the group got access to the Coggeshall School and whether it had access to other city buildings.

Farley told NBC 10 the city council and school board will discuss the matter at a meeting later this month.
