I-Team: City worker takes sick day, charged with DUI

PROVIDENCE -

A Providence highway foreman admitted to the NBC 10 I-Team on Tuesday he made a mistake when he used sick time to go drinking and then got into an accident.

According to a police report, 65-year-old Vincent Giandolfi drove his own Chrysler Sebring over the center line on Smith Street and crashed head first into a car driven by a 27-year-old Pawtucket woman on Aug. 9.

Police said Giandolfi had extremely slow motor skills and his speech was slurred and very slow.

Giandolfi told police he was drinking at the Sports Tap in Providence. He said he had two drinks.

Aside from the drinks, Giandolfi told police he also took prescription drugs – painkillers, muscle relaxers and anti-anxiety pills.

Giandolfi was charged with drunken driving. He's scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 27.

When asked what he would say to taxpayers when he called out for half a sick day only to go drinking, Giandolfi didn't respond.

Then he replied, "I don't want to make any comments. I just said that right now. My lawyer said if you want any statements, get in touch with him."

Calls placed to Giandolfi's lawyer were not returned Tuesday.

Giandolfi remains employed but is taking some personal time off. He's worked for the city for 38 years.

A city spokeswoman told NBC 10 they will look into the matter.

The woman Giandolfi hit is being treated for neck and back injuries.
