A New Bedford Police Sergeant says ‘inexperience' and ‘young age' likely played a huge role in a terrifying accident that happened on Friday night in the city.
New Bedford detectives from the Traffic Division are still trying to figure out what went wrong after three small children ended up being hit by a fast moving on Sawyer Street just west of Bellville Ave.
Police Sgt. John Beaudoin told NBC10 the young female driver hit a parked car, the corner of a house and then struck three young children who were sitting idle on the sidewalk on bicycles and scooters that weren't moving.
Almost unbelievably the children are all expected to be okay, and are said to have only suffered minor injuries.
The Sgt. Beaudoin says, right now, it appears that the young woman may have accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes.
Some neighbors say they rushed in to help the frantic mother and injured kids.
Andrew Backlund lives across the street.
He said, "All I know is that a woman was driving too fast, and she hit three children, a two-year-old little girl, and two children who were a little older than that, but it was a boy and another girl. It was chaos after that. There was a lot of yelling, and a lot of panic."
Sgt. Beaudoin says each of the children was transported to Hasbro Children's Hospital in ambulances.
The young female driver was cited for operating to endanger, and New Bedford Police says it does not appear drugs or alcohol were a factor.
