Police announce crackdown on drinking and driving

Posted: Updated:

Police announced a statewide crackdown on drunk driving Thursday.

Beginning Friday and continuing through the end of Labor Day weekend, extra police will be out on the roads in force looking for drunk drivers.

The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign is a national effort to reduce alcohol and drug related accidents.

Police said last year 25 people were murdered in the state of Rhode Island and just as many people were killed by impaired drivers.

In addition to this annual campaign, police are launching a federally funded task force that will add resources to this crackdown effort outside the holiday weekend.

Police said the heaviest concentration of officers will be in Providence, but 38 police departments statewide will be participating in this crackdown.
