A recently painted mural along Interstate 95 in downtown Providence was defaced by vandals.
The state Department of Transportation said the mural was designed by David Macaulay, an author, illustrator and Rhode Island School of Design professor.
Graffiti was scribbled across the mural, which is near where Route 146 south merges with I-95.
Rose Amoros, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation, said crews will be working through Wednesday to clean it, although they are having trouble. Once they remove the paint, she said they will restore it.
The DOT said the mural is one of two recently completed by Macaulay that is part of a highway beautification project aimed at reducing vandalism.
