Fire leaves at least 20 people homeless

Posted: Updated:

At least 20 people were left temporarily homeless after a two-alarm fire in Central Falls.

Fire Chief Robert Bradley Jr. told NBC 10 News that the fire was called in just before 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Bradley said there was heavy smoke and fire coming from a top-floor apartment of the triple-decker at 30 Cowden St. and that a second alarm was sounded.

An investigation found that two tenants had left to pick up supplies and returned to find the flames.

Bradley said the fire started in the kitchen of the third floor and spread to the entire apartment.

Electric service was cut to all six apartments, so the local chapter of the American Red Cross was asked to find temporary shelter for the adults and children living in all units.

Bradley said no one was hurt.
