Raynham voters approve slots parlor

RAYNHAM, Mass. -

Voters in Raynham on Tuesday night overwhelmingly approved a slot parlor at Raynham Park. The vote was 1,822 to 290.

According to The Taunton Gazette, Raynham Park LLC, including former dog track owner George Carney and operating partner Greenwood Racing said it plans to invest $220 million in the Raynham site.

Carney said he's hoping that a new slot parlor will catch on.

"It all depends on how good business is. We'll be always adding on. Hopefully my game will be to add more," George Carney said.

The proposal seemed to get the full support of the community.

"I'm not a gambler, but you know something? You shouldn't leave the building empty and it gives Raynham money so why not?" said supporter Mary Amaral.

"Three generations of my family worked there. It's good for the town. What's the down side?" said supporter Lou Pacheco.

In addition to Raynham Park, three other applicants remain in play. The Milbury (Rush casino, of Mass Gaming and Entertainment), Leominster (Cordish, of PPE Casino Resorts) and Tewksbury (Penn National Gaming) slot license applicants each have their own community referendum votes scheduled for September.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will pick from those applicants that approve a slot parlor.

The other three communities in the running will vote next month. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will pick from those that approve a slot parlor.

Rhode Island is watching closely, and hopes the winning slot parlor is far from its borders because half the patrons at Twin River come from Massachusetts and contribute millions of dollars annually to the Rhode Island General Fund.
