Suspect in RI killings, abduction is cleared

PROVIDENCE -

A man initially identified as a suspect in a Rhode Island double homicide and mentioned in a related nationwide Amber Alert has been cleared of wrongdoing and released from custody.

Police on Sunday said 22-year-old Malcolm Crowell was a suspect in the killings early Sunday morning in Johnston. The Amber Alert had said he abducted 2-year-old Isaiah Perez from the home where two women were shot to death.

The two women were identified on Monday as 40-year-old Evelyn Burgos and 25-year-old Vanessa Perez. Crowell was Perez's ex-boyfriend.

Crowell was arrested later Sunday while at work in Fall River, Mass.

At a news conference Monday, police said Crowell was not involved at all in the crime and actually tried to help police find the boy. Police said his tip helped lead Providence investigators to the housing project where the boy was found wandering Sunday night.

"I'm an innocent man. I love Vanessa. I love Evelyn. I have love for them. I'm a victim," Crowell told NBC 10.

Crowell said he was upset with the way the case was handled, especially since he couldn't leave jail to get his 4-year-old daughter, who was in the house with his ex-girlfriend when she and her mother were killed.

"You guys took me away from my kid? You know what? My kid? My kid is in DCYF right now. I'm getting out of jail, what am I supposed to do? I gotta go to my kid," he said.

Crowell's uncle, Momoh Fahnbulleh was upset that his nephew was portrayed as a possible killer and kidnapper.

"It hurt because it's not the characteristic of my nephew. And it also hurt because you know, that's my family name getting put out there looking like some kind of animal. And you know, that's not the case, you know? Malcolm is not that type of person," Fahnbulleh said.
