Dozens flocked to a North Providence church on Friday to see for themselves what believers say is a sign from God.
A steady stream of people have been stopping and looking up at the gray metal cross on top of the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
"At first, scientists would think that there's something going on with the metals maybe so that's what the image is, a silhouette. It's kind of like when you're a child with the clouds and you form your own pictures. But in this kind of world, it's good to have something to believe in," said Cristina Serradas of Attleboro.
Some people say they see the outline of the Virgin Mary, whom Christians believe is the mother of God, in the darker etching on the cross. Some say they also see the baby Jesus in Mary's arms.
"I don't quite know what it is. I mean, it's certainly an iconic image on that cross. It's a water stain of some kind, but it's pouring rain right now. It's been pouring rain all day. The cross should be soaking wet and it's not. There's some sort of icon, some sort of image on there and it's very familiar if you're Catholic," said Ryan McCarty of North Smithfield.
While traffic on Mineral Spring Avenue where the church is located is fairly heavy, there's been more than usual with people coming to take a look at the cross.
Is it all coincidence? Or are people seeing what they want to see?
"It's very appropriate if it was going to happen anywhere this would be high on the list," McCarty said.
No one can really say how it got there, how long it's been there or if there are other explanations.
But for now, for the believers, it's all good enough.
