A heated debate at a school committee meeting in Somerset ended Monday with the superintendent being put on paid administrative leave and two other people quitting.
School committee members Victor Machado and Jamison Souza led a charge to oust superintendent Richard Medeiros while also calling for an investigation after learning of a $410,000 deficit.
The vote, which was 3-2, caused School Committee Chairman Donald Rebello to resign.
"I'm resigning my position effective immediately. I very simply will not be part of it," he said.
Special Education Director Robert Murray also quit.
"I have more integrity in my little finger than what I've seen tonight. I'm out of here," he said.
Committee members said they found out about the deficit way too late.
"We need to start taking some action. This is the first action," Souza said.
"We're elected officials and people aren't talking to us. It's a cult, a mafia.," Machado said.
The office of the superintendent wouldn't comment.
At the meeting, it was suggested that the director of curriculum would be in charge, the same person who steps in when the superintendent is out of town.
