Newport named Top 10 for same-sex weddings

Posted: Updated:
NEWPORT, R.I. -

Same-sex marriages have barely become legal in Rhode Island and already one Ocean State city is being listed as one of the best places for couples planning their own ceremony.

Newport has been named as one of the world's Top 10 up and coming spots for same-sex destination weddings by CheapFlights.com, an online travel blog.

"We're real excited about it," says Evan Smith, CEO of the Newport Visitors Bureau. "We think it's going to increase our wedding business."

A wedding business that already comprises 30 percent of all weddings held in the state. Smith said the city hosts 1,500 weddings a year, and now that same sex marriage is legal, he expects an increase of at least 10 percent.

"That will be a nice boost," says Smith. "We're taking something good and making it even better."

Newport Mayor Henry Winthrop is also proud of Newport's inclusion on the list.

"We have it all," explains Mayor Winthrop. "Just the natural beauty of the harbor, of Ocean Drive, of the Cliff Walk attracts visitors every year."

Visitor Talia Sweenor was not surprised to learn that her favorite recreational destination has been tabbed as a top wedding destination.

"I don't even live here," says Sweenor, who lives in South County. "But I come here every weekend or a lot of times during the week and it's just fun."

Newport's residents and officials welcome couples of any type to this seaside sanctuary.

"I think Newport fits the bill," says Mayor Winthrop. "One of the things we were founded on is tolerance and religious freedoms, and this is just an extension of that."
