Pawtucket homicide was second incident at home

Posted: Updated:

Pawtucket police said Monday that a weekend killing on Dawson Street was not a random act of violence.

They're on the lookout for two assailants.

"I'm not going to get into specifics regarding that, but we do believe he was targeted for some reason," Maj. Arthur Martins said. "It was not a random act."

Pawtucket police said two male intruders shot and killed Jeffrey Lebrun at about 1:45 a.m. Sunday in his home.

Investigators won't speculate on a motive. But neighbors said they think it may be drug-related, saying Lebrun had a prescription for medical marijuana.

Whatever the cause, it's a frightening thought there was a murder on this quiet Pawtucket street.

"We're all scared," said one neighbor who only wanted to go by his first name Jim. "Because if something can happen like this so close to home. It can happen anywhere."

Jim said the neighborhood is full of families just like Lebrun's. Families that welcome each other into each other's homes, have a good laugh, and watch each other's backs.

Lebrun, 41, lived with his wife and teenage daughter, who weren't home Sunday, but they were at the house in May when Lebrun fought off two masked intruders. He was stabbed in the process.

Could the stabbers and the shooters be the same people.

"I don't have any evidence to support that link, but that's something we're certainly looking at," Martins said.

Martins also revealed Lebrun had a criminal record. Lebrun was arrested for several offenses, but had his last run in with the law in 2009.

Neighbors said they didn't know him to be a troublemaker.

"(He was) very quiet," Jim said. "Never bother nobody. I travel through here all the time ... and like I said, you never heard a word out of him."

Now that he's gone, friends sent their condolence flowers to the family, and neighbors on Dawson Street said they hope police find his killers soon.
