A man was shot and killed inside a second-floor apartment in New Bedford early Friday morning, police said.
Police said they received a 911 call at about 3 a.m. for a report of a man shot inside an apartment building at the corner of Pleasant and Austin streets.
"It was like a pop. Bang! I said to my husband, 'Do you think?', and he said, 'Go back to sleep. It's firecrackers', because we've had a lot of those things going on around here. It's hard to tell what's going on," said neighbor Tracy Krol.
Emergency crews found a man unconscious and rushed him to St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The victim's sister told NBC 10 that the man was 29-year-old Scott Souza of New Bedford.
Neighbors told NBC 10 that Souza was a nice guy who took care of his grandmother and recently put on a fireworks display for neighborhood children.
"He never caused a problem in the neighborhood," said resident James Brumley.
Krol said the violence has to stop.
"Our kids can't even play for fear of this happening to them. There are a lot of children on this street. That's the sad thing, that there is so many kids on this street and I think the kids deserve more than the people taking away from the community and from our kids," she said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the New Bedford Police Department at 508-991-6300.
Police said citizens can submit anonymous tips by visiting tipsubmit.com or texting the word "CALL50" to the number 274637. The text will not appear to come from your phone number as it is first rerouted through a server in Canada.
