Burrillville police: 'It's not the road, it's the drivers'

Posted: Updated:

A three-car pile-up on Route 102 and East Avenue at about 8 a.m. Monday caused one car to roll on its side and onto the hood of another vehicle.

It was third crash in 10 days along the same stretch of Route 102 in Burrillville.

A Burrillville woman and her 1-year-old grandson were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to be OK.

The scene was entirely different Thursday.

Two cars collided head-on, killing 19-year-old Shannon Heil, of Burrillville, and her 19-year-old friend, Markell Torres, of Easthampton, Mass., who was sitting in the back seat.

Thirty-seven-year-old Massiel Ortiz was making a U-turn on Route 102 on July 5 when she was hit by a pickup truck travelling southbound one mile north of East Avenue. The Providence woman was killed. Her two daughters, both passengers, survived the crash.

A car seat could be seen resting on the pavement. It belonged to Erik Myette's 1-year-old son. Myette was driving the pickup truck. Both were treated for minor injuries.

Three accidents in 10 days have left three dead on this stretch of Route 102. But Burrillville police aren't buying the argument that the road is the problem.

"The majority of the time, accidents on this highway are caused because people who are distracted. People aren't paying attention and they're not driving the way they are supposed to be," said Maj. Lareto Guglietta, acting chief of police. "It's not the road, it's the drivers."

In Monday's crash, police said they would cite Daniel Wilson of Mapleville with running a red light.
