The New England Patriots said Monday that the team exchanged more than 2,500 Aaron Hernandez jerseys over the weekend.
The team held a one-time-only exchange. Fans could swap a No. 81 Hernandez jersey for any other player's jersey in stock.
Hernandez is being held in jail on a murder charge. Prosecutors say he orchestrated the killing of Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional football player from Boston who was Hernandez's friend.
Hernandez pleaded not guilty, but the Patriots cut him just hours after his arrest in June.
A spokeswoman said the Patriots exchanged more than 2,500 Hernandez jerseys, about one-third of them were youth jerseys.
The top five replacement jerseys were Vince Wilfork, Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Stevan Ridley and Chandler Jones.
The exchange program cost the team about $250,000, the spokeswoman said.
