I-Team: Warwick acknowledges error in some property tax bills

Posted: Updated:

The NBC 10 I-Team has learned that some Warwick residents may have been denied tax exemptions on their property tax bills.

According to Susan Baker, a spokeswoman for Mayor Scott Avedisian, a software issue "in which the second owner of a property listed was not recognized" resulted in that person not getting their exemptions.

Most of the people who are entitled to the exemptions are senior citizens and veterans. Baker said the city is still trying to determine just how many people were denied the exemptions.

She said that escrow vendors have been notified and that an adjustment will be made on second-quarter tax bills for those whose taxes are paid from escrow accounts.

For anyone who paid their tax bills in full and didn't realize their exemptions were not listed on the bill, they can get a refund by contacting City Hall.
