Pawtucket man charged with murder in death of daughter

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -

A Pawtucket man was ordered held without bail Friday in connection with the murder of his 10-year-old daughter.

Jorge DePina, 32, entered no plea at his arraignment in Providence District Court. He had been charged with child abuse and cruelty but the charges were later upgraded after an autopsy showed Aleida DePina died of blunt-force trauma.

Jorge DePina and his family screamed in court when they learned of the upgraded charges.

"Either he did this to his young daughter or, because he has custody, he knew this and didn't take proper care of her," said Capt. Kevin Crawley of the Pawtucket Police Department.

The autopsy showed Aleida DePina was suffering for several days. When Jorge DePina took his daughter to The Miriam Hospital on Wednesday, she was already dead.

A lawyer for Jorge DePina argued there was no evidence his client committed murder or assaulted his daughter.

Investigators spent Thursday scouring Jorge DePina's home on Knowles Street, where he lived with his daughter.

A green van was towed from in front of the hospital, and police say it is part of the investigation.

Neighbors described Aleida DePina as a quiet little girl afraid to make eye contact with anyone but her father. One woman who declined to give her name told NBC 10 she could tell something was wrong.

"It was troublesome. You could tell something was not right. You know as a parent. You know telltale signs of a child that's in trouble," she said.

DePina is scheduled to be back in court July 19 for a bail hearing.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
