A judge on Tuesday sentenced a Providence man to prison for his role in a drunken driving crash that killed another man.
Corey Johnston, 25, pled guilty to driving under the influence, death resulting; driving to endanger, death resulting; and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.
Police said Johnston was driving the wrong way on Interstate 95 North on March 18 when he struck two vehicles, killing 40-year-old Domenic Izzi who was the driver of one of the vehicles. The other driver was not injured.
Superior Court Justice Netti Vogel sentenced Johnston to 15 years with seven to serve. Of the seven years to serve, Vogel ordered four to be served at the Adult Correctional Institutions and three on home confinement.
"He was so drunk he couldn't control that vehicle," Vogel said. "He was so drunk he didn't care if he could control that vehicle."
Johnston was also ordered to pay a $500 fine and sentenced to 500 hours of community service when he's released. As part of his community serve, Vogel ordered Johnston to speak to young people about how drinking and driving resulted in him killing a man.
The judge also reminded Johnston that he destroyed a family as well as forever changing his own life.
Izzi's sister spoke on her family's behalf.
"Is there one person who has always been there for you throughout your whole life, from your birth?" LoAnn Izzi-Natale said. "There is for me; my brother, Domenic, I call him Donnie."
Izzi's sister spoke eloquently about how her family is forever changed.
"My four-year-old son, Tony, continues to say things like, ‘Mom, text that photo to uncle,'" she said. "Shortly afterwards, I hear him say, 'Oh ...'"
Although Johnston apologized for his actions, Izzi-Natale said it will never be enough.
"Just close your eyes and that is all I feel," Izzi-Natale said. "Darkness, where there was light every day of my life."
