Former professional boxer paralyzed in trampoline accident

Posted: Updated:

Former boxer and gymnast Gary "Tiger" Balletto was showing his son a gymnastic move on the trampoline at his Cranston home Sunday night when he fell off and landed on the ground, fracturing three vertebrae in his neck.

Balletto underwent a five-hour operation at Rhode Island Hospital and doctors are unsure if he will walk again.

Balletto, who is 38, retired from boxing in 2006 with a 31-3 professional record.

"I used to spar with the guy, we used to train together," former Olympic boxer Demetrius Andrade told NBC 10. "It's sad to see somebody I know, that was just out there having fun, now is going to end up being in a wheelchair."

Balletto owns a successful construction and real estate company. He also owns and operates a Providence boxing gym.

Balletto's family is asking for privacy.
