RI Health Dept. expands olive recall at Job Lot stores

Posted: Updated:

The state Health Department announced Friday it is expanding the recall of Bel Frantoio olives sold at Ocean State Job Lot stores.

Job Lot is recalling all Bel Frantoio olives, after the Health Department found that the Mediterranean Olives: Calcidica Sweet and Calcidica Salted olives were not handled appropriately to prevent the toxin that causes botulism.

The Health Department said the olives are labeled "Keep Refrigerated" but that they were sold at room temperature. The products were sold in New York and throughout the Northeast.

Other olive products produced by Bel Frantoio that were sold at Job Lot, as well as other brands of olives, do not pose a safety issue. However, the Health Department is encouraging customers to return any Bel Frantoio olives to Job Lot for a refund.

Anyone who has eaten the olives and has experienced abdominal cramps; difficulty breaking, speaking or swallowing; double vision; muscle weakness; muscle aches; nausea; vomiting; diarrhea or fever should call their doctor.

No illnesses have been reported.
