For Robert Streitfield it has always been about music.
"It was his life. He went to Berklee College of Music in Boston," said Nasia Bachman-Streitfield, Robert's daughter. "He went in to the Navy as a musician and was one of the conductors at Navy Band Northeast. I was growing up and continued after he retired, teaching middle school band and privately."
Streitfield was a teacher at a Cumberland middle school, directed the community band in Jamestown before moving to Virginia 10 years ago. That's where he was diagnosed with lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.
He was diagnosed about six years ago and on Feb. 1, 2013 died of cancer.
"And we miss him," Nasia said.
And that's why Robert's daughters, Nasia and Lauren, decided to approach the Rhode Island Blood Center. They wanted a blood drive in his memory. Not only did blood products help prolong their dad's life, donating blood was a regular part of his life before his diagnosis.
"And so when I turned 18 I started donating as regularly as I could," Nasia said.
And even more so after his diagnosis, even though she was in Rhode Island, and dad was in Virginia.
"The thought of karma. If I was doing it here for someone's parents, then someone was doing it in Virginia for my dad," Nasia said.
And Lauren has been giving blood more regularly.
"The feeling you get from donating, the feeling I get from donating is one of good energy. The knowledge that something that I have in plenty can help someone, either prolong their life or save their life in many cases or give them a better quality of life is a tremendous good feeling," said Lauren Bachman-Streitfeld.
This year's NBC 10 – B101 Summer Blood Drive is dedicated to Streitfield and will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick. All donors will receive a Dunkin' Donuts gift card as a thank you.
