I-Team: Woman accused of misappropriating funds from youth baseball club

WARWICK, R.I. -

Rhode Island State Police charged a Lincoln woman with unlawful appropriation of funds from the bank account of a youth baseball club.

Officers arrested 43-year-old Sandra Gaboury on Wednesday morning. No plea was entered to the felony charge at Gaboury's arraignment in Kent County District Court.

In an affidavit filed at District Court, police allege Gaboury misused more than $20,000 of funds collected by the East Coast Rhinos organization, part of the Amateur Athletic Union. The affidavit cited complaints from 16 families involved in the club.

Sandra Gaboury and her husband, Christopher, founded and managed the Rhinos.

The NBC 10 I-Team began investigating complaints against the Gabourys in March.

Parents said they had paid hundreds of dollars to register their children for teams, but the club suddenly shut down in late January.

Businesses reported bounced checks and unpaid bills.

Outside of the courthouse, Sandy Gaboury told the I-Team that the money has been refunded to parents and that "they should be happy."

Dee Costa-Quezada, a parent, said she hasn't received a dime and doesn't know anyone on the 10-year-old team who has.

NBC 10 has learned from other parents that the Gabourys offered some families partial refunds.
