A Providence school for girls broke ground Monday on improvements to its future home.
Sophia Academy plans to move to 582 Elmwood Ave. in early 2014. The building is a former bank and will be renovated to serve the student body.
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and academy founder Mary Reilly joined staff and students for a groundbreaking ceremony and to launch a fundraising campaign.
Sophia Academy is a non-denominational and independent middle school for girls from low-income homes. The school currently rents space in a former parochial school on Branch Avenue.
