I-Team: Man accused of burning wife to remain at ACI

PROVIDENCE -

A man accused of burning his wife with a frying pan will remain at the state prison after a bail hearing Monday.

Forty-two-year-old Danilo Cabrera returned to Providence District Court, following the proceedings through a translator.

Pawtucket police say Cabrera attacked his wife with a hot frying pan last month, burning her all over her body, including her breasts and genitals.

The case drew criticism when Cabrera was arraigned on a lesser charge and needed just $5,000 to post bail. With the charges upgraded to include assault with intent to murder and kidnapping, he's been held without bail since May 23.

"He agrees to be held 90 days pending a possible grand jury indictment in this matter," defense attorney David Shein told the court.

The attorney general's office has three months to take the case to a grand jury, although it's expected that process will take just a couple of weeks.

The victim's words to police were chilling.

She told detectives that "after telling Danilo that she wanted a divorce, he asked for one more favor. He wanted to have sex one last time ... "

When she agreed, he allegedly bound her with duct tape and attacked her with the frying pan, telling her "that he was doing this so that she would respect him."

The victim was able to come to court, accompanied by an advocate who helps domestic violence victims. Investigators said the next step is for her to testify before a grand jury.
