License, registration fees in RI increase July 1

Posted: Updated:

Rhode Island will be charging more for driver's license renewals and motor vehicle registrations starting next month.

Starting July 1, license and registration fees will increase $10. It's the beginning of three years of increases that the state says are needed to maintain highways.

License renewal is currently $31.50 for five years. By 2016, license renewal will cost $61.50.

The money will go into a new Highway Maintenance Trust Fund.

Although additional license and registration fees are paid to the state Division of Motor Vehicles, the funds will go to the state Department of Transportation.

State officials say the surcharges will eliminate the need to borrow money, which will in turn help Rhode Island reduce its debt.
